Amsterdam and bicycles are inseparable. With over 900,000 bikes in a city of under a million people, cycling is not only a tourist attraction here – it’s how most locals get around. Renting a bike is the best way to experience the city like an Amsterdammer: cutting through narrow canal streets, crossing bridges at your own pace, and reaching hidden neighbourhoods.

This guide covers everything you need to know about bike rentals in Amsterdam. From choosing the right type of bike and finding a pickup location near your hotel, to understanding the booking process, local traffic rules, and what to look for in a reliable rental company.

Why Rent a Bike in Amsterdam?

Before diving into the how, it’s worth understanding why cycling beats every other transport option in this city:

  1. It provides freedom. You can go anywhere, anytime.
  2. It’s faster. Amsterdam’s canal ring is compact. Most major sights are within a 15-minute cycle of each other. By bike, you’ll skip tram queues and traffic.
  3. It’s cheaper. A day of bike rental typically costs less than four tram journeys.
  4. It’s how locals do it. Amsterdam’s cycling infrastructure is world-class: dedicated bike lanes on nearly every street, clear signage, and a culture that genuinely prioritises cyclists over cars.
  5. You’ll see more. On a bike, you can stop spontaneously, duck into a street market, explore a neighbourhood off the tourist trail, and cover far more ground than on foot.

Amsterdam is rated one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. That’s not surprising, as it was designed for cyclists. Its flat terrain also makes cycling quite easy, even if you’re not using an e-bike or haven’t been on a bike in years.

Where to Rent Bikes in Amsterdam

Black Bikes is Amsterdam’s largest bike rental network, with 20 bike rental locations across the Netherlands, 16 of which are in Amsterdam. Most bikes can be picked up from any location with the ability to drop them off at any other location. This gives you unbeatable flexibility. Black Bikes also operates locations in three other Dutch cities, making it ideal if your trip extends beyond the capital:

  • Diemen: a small municipality directly bordering Amsterdam’s east side, reachable by metro in under 10 minutes
  • Haarlem: a beautiful historic city just 20 minutes from Amsterdam by train
  • Utrecht: the Netherlands’ fourth-largest city, equally cycle-friendly
  • Den Haag (The Hague): home to the Dutch parliament and stunning North Sea beaches nearby

Hop-On / Drop-Off Flexibility

One of Black Bikes’ biggest advantages is its hop-on / drop-off system: with standard bikes, you can pick up at one location and return to any other Black Bikes shop. This is ideal if you’re cycling from your hotel near Vondelpark in the morning and want to drop off near Central Station before catching your train. All our shops are open daily and we even open a few shops on public holidays, so you can rest assured when it comes to flexibility.

Note: Special bikes (e-bikes, cargo bikes, tandems) must be returned to the same shop where you picked them up. Groups of 10 or more need to confirm alternative drop-off arrangements in advance.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Bike Rental

  1. Lock your bike properly. Use both ART locks that come with your rental. Always lock to a fixed object (bike rack, railing, lamppost), not just to itself. Bike theft in Amsterdam is common and a locked bike is far less of a target.
  2. Stick to bike lanes. Amsterdam’s bike lanes (fietspad) are marked in red or with dedicated signage. Throughout Amsterdam, you’ll find many other bikes using these lanes. Using them keeps you safe and keeps locals happy.
  3. Return before closing time. All Black Bikes shops close at 18:00 during the winter. During the summer, a selection of our shops are open until later. Even during public holidays, some of our locations are open. Returns after closing aren’t possible, which could result in extra charges. If you’re out late, plan to return your bike before heading to dinner.
  4. Pick up near your hotel. With 16 Amsterdam locations, there’s likely a shop within a few minutes’ walk. Use your accommodation address in the booking flow to find the nearest one.
  5. Bring ID. You’ll need a valid ID (passport or driving licence) at pickup and a deposit on e-bikes and cargo e-bikes.
  6. Plan your route before you go. The Black Bikes Amsterdam City Guide has great route suggestions and neighbourhood tips built specifically for cyclists.

Amsterdam Bike Rules: What You Need to Know

Amsterdam’s cycling culture has a few unwritten and written rules that every visitor should understand before hitting the road:

  1. Ride in the bike lane. This isn’t optional. Cycling on the pavement (footpath) is illegal and genuinely dangerous in a city where pedestrians fill the streets.
  2. Signal your turns. Extend your left or right arm to signal before turning. Locals do it instinctively; visitors who don’t signal cause accidents.
  3. No cycling while using your phone. It’s illegal and carries an on-the-spot fine (currently €100+). Earphones are technically permitted in one ear, but two earphones are illegal.
  4. Give way to trams. Trams always have priority. Also avoid crossing tram tracks at sharp angles since your wheel can get caught.
  5. Lights are mandatory after dark. Your rental bike will have lights, so ensure you use them. Riding without lights at night is a finable offence.
  6. Don’t cycle drunk. Yes, it’s Amsterdam. But cycling under the influence carries the same legal weight as drink-driving. While many people bike after a few drinks, there are serious consequences for errors.
  7. Helmets are not required by law for adults in the Netherlands, though e-bike riders may want to consider one.

  • Is there a minimum rental period? Yes. The minimum is either a 3-hour rental or a full day (24 hours). There’s no hourly rental beyond the 3-hour option.
  • What happens if my bike gets stolen? The mandatory protection (from €4.99) covers theft. Report the theft to the local police and bring the report number to the shop. Always use both provided locks.

  • Can I extend my rental? Contact the shop directly to check availability. Extensions are subject to demand, especially in peak tourist season (April to August).
  • What if I get a puncture or mechanical problem? Contact the nearest Black Bikes shop. Depending on location, they can advise on the nearest location to swap the bike or assist with the issue.
  • Is cycling in Amsterdam really safe for tourists? Yes, Amsterdam has world-class cycling infrastructure, and the roads are well-designed for cyclists of all experience levels.
