Amsterdam Light Festival

The Amsterdam Light Festival transforms the canals into an open-air exhibition of light art every winter. The 15th edition takes place from 26 November 2026 until 17 January 2027, with artworks installed on and around Amsterdam’s canals. The festival is particularly atmospheric after sunset, when illuminated installations can be seen along the water. Most of the artworks are concentrated around the historic canal belt and eastern part of the city.

A canal cruise is one of the easiest ways to see the festival because many installations are designed to be viewed from the water. Festival cruises usually follow a route through the canal belt and eastern docks, passing areas such as Oosterdok, the Amstel and Herengracht. Walking and cycling during the Light Festival

You can also explore the festival on foot using the official walking route. The route is around 6 kilometres long, so comfortable shoes and warm clothing are recommended. A bike can be useful for travelling between different parts of the route or combining the festival with other areas of Amsterdam. King’s Day in Amsterdam (Koningsdag)

King’s Day is the Dutch national celebration of the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. It takes place every year on 27 April and turns Amsterdam into one of the largest street parties in the Netherlands. Residents and visitors wear orange, boats fill the canals and streets across the city are taken over by markets, music and outdoor celebrations.

The King’s Day free market

One of the best-known traditions is the vrijmarkt, or free market. Residents sell second-hand clothes, toys, books and household items directly on the street. Where to celebrate King’s Day

The atmosphere differs considerably between neighbourhoods. The Jordaan is known for crowded streets and Dutch music, while Vondelpark has a more family-oriented atmosphere. Amsterdam Zuid has large free markets, while the city centre is dominated by street parties and busy canals.

Getting around Amsterdam on King’s Day

Transport is very different from a normal day in Amsterdam. Many roads in the city centre close and trams and buses may follow adjusted routes. Walking is usually easiest inside the busiest areas. Cycling can still be useful for reaching neighbourhoods outside the main crowds, but you may need to park your bike and continue on foot once you approach the centre. Amsterdam Pride and WorldPride

Amsterdam Pride takes place every summer and is one of the city’s largest annual celebrations. In 2026, Amsterdam hosted WorldPride from 25 July until 8 August, with events, concerts, exhibitions, parties and demonstrations taking place across the city. The event celebrates LGBTQ+ culture, freedom, equality and diversity. Amsterdam Pride began in 1996 and has since developed into one of Europe’s best-known Pride celebrations.

Canal Parade

The Canal Parade is Amsterdam Pride’s most famous event. Decorated boats sail through the historic canals while large crowds gather along the streets, bridges and quays. The 2026 Canal Parade took place on 1 August. Popular viewing areas can become extremely crowded, so visitors wanting a good position should arrive well before the parade begins.

The programme generally includes street parties, club nights, concerts, art, debates and cultural events. Popular nightlife areas include Reguliersdwarsstraat and the streets around Rembrandtplein. Major Pride events may also take place at Museumplein, Westergas and other locations across Amsterdam.

Getting around during Amsterdam Pride

Walking, cycling and public transport are usually the most practical ways to travel during Pride. Streets immediately beside the Canal Parade route can become too crowded for cycling, so it is best to park outside the busiest area and continue on foot. Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE)

The Amsterdam Dance Event is one of the world’s largest events dedicated to electronic music. In 2026, ADE takes place from 21 to 25 October. For five days, Amsterdam is filled with concerts, club nights, conferences, workshops and cultural events. Music ranges from house and techno to trance, drum & bass, experimental electronic music and electronic pop.

One of the things that makes ADE unusual is that there is no single festival site. Events take place at hundreds of locations throughout Amsterdam, including clubs, theatres, warehouses, hotels and temporary venues. Well-known ADE locations include:

ADE Festival and Conference

The ADE Festival consists of performances and parties throughout the city, while the ADE Conference brings together artists, producers, labels and music-industry professionals. Conference topics include music production, technology, artist development, sustainability and the future of nightlife.

Getting around Amsterdam during ADE

Because ADE venues are spread across Amsterdam, transport between events is an important part of planning your schedule. Cycling can be particularly convenient for travelling between venues without depending on late-night tram or bus connections. Grachtenfestival Amsterdam

Grachtenfestival brings classical music, jazz and new musical talent to unusual locations throughout Amsterdam every August. In 2026, the festival takes place from 7 to 16 August. Concerts are organised in canal houses, museums, churches, gardens, theatres, rooftops and outdoor spaces.

The setting is an important part of the festival. Performances can take place inside historic buildings one evening and alongside a canal or on a rooftop the next. The programme usually includes:

SAIL Amsterdam

SAIL Amsterdam is one of the largest maritime events in the Netherlands and takes place once every five years. The next edition is scheduled for 21 to 25 August 2030. During SAIL, tall ships, historic vessels, modern ships and naval vessels gather around Amsterdam’s IJ waterfront. One of the main highlights is the Sail-In Parade, when ships enter Amsterdam via the North Sea Canal.

Getting around during SAIL

The area around Amsterdam Central Station, Oosterdok and the IJ becomes extremely busy during SAIL. Public transport, walking and cycling are generally more practical than travelling by car. A bicycle can be useful for reaching different parts of the waterfront, although the busiest areas may need to be explored on foot. Visiting earlier in the day or on a weekday can also help you avoid the largest crowds.

DGTL Amsterdam

DGTL is an annual electronic music festival held at the NDSM Docklands in Amsterdam Noord. The next Amsterdam edition takes place from 26 to 28 March 2027. The festival combines electronic music with large-scale visual installations, art and a strong focus on sustainability. House, techno, disco and experimental electronic music are all represented across multiple stages.

NDSM Docklands

The former NDSM shipyard is an important part of the DGTL experience. Warehouses, docks and industrial spaces are transformed into festival stages and art installations. NDSM is also one of Amsterdam’s main areas for street art and creative culture. Getting to DGTL Amsterdam

The easiest route from central Amsterdam is usually via the free ferry behind Amsterdam Central Station. Ferries cross the IJ to NDSM Wharf, from where the festival site is nearby. Cycling is also a practical option. You can take your bicycle onto the ferry and continue through Amsterdam Noord. When is the best time to visit Amsterdam?

There is no single best period to visit Amsterdam. It depends on the experience you are looking for. April brings the enormous outdoor celebration of King’s Day. Summer is filled with music, Pride and cultural festivals. October turns Amsterdam into the centre of the electronic music industry during ADE, while winter brings the Amsterdam Light Festival to the canals. Major events also mean larger crowds, higher demand for accommodation and temporary changes to roads and public transport. Check event dates before booking your trip and leave extra travel time on the busiest days.
